Fashion in Movies: Zooey Deschanel in New Girl / (500) days of summer

Getting together a new look with a little vintage flavor is so chic these days. The reason why people like to roll back the wheels of fashion time machine is that a dress let's say from the 50s represents such a classy, sophisticated, unique style, rather than something outdated or totally out of fashion. Just think of Audrey Hepburn in her little black dress, eating her breakfast in front of Tiffany's-an unforgettable 'fashion in movies' moment.

The glory of those old movies [that you've watched either because of the beautifully unfolding romantic stories, or the 'femme fatale' manner in which Greta Garbo smoked a cigarette] are now back with some of these gorgeous details that make us want more. We have the movies (Pleasantville, Married Life) and even series (Mad Men, Smash, Downton Abbey) placed in another era we think of as --aww, so retro!!

...And there are movies and series where the whole plot is built around the style and personality of a cute character, where the story has little or absolutely nothing to do with fashion or a particular era, it's just simply there for the sake of indirect characterization. Take Zooey Deschanel for example. Her role as Summer Finn in (500) Days of Summer was simply unforgettable, influenced many of us as a matter of retro / vintage / geek or whatever-you-call-fashion and the music...man, it was such a great combination of fashion moments and music that the story didn't even matter that much.

I could go on with the list of the cute Zooey outfits, really, but if you didn't have enough, study further the funky combination of colors and textures in Jess' ensembles in the New Girl series. I've recently found a website -- what would Zooey Descahnel wear? with loads of images from each episode. You can browse through a number of categories depending on what kind of inspiring outfits you're looking for - summer? winter? casual? fancy? It's Jess! Having it all!

Inspiration. Innovation. A style algorythm

The last couple of weeks I’ve spent with deliberately refusing to visit any of my bookmarked fashion favorites. I guess I needed to clear and shake up things a little bit in order to get going and create new ideas, dreams of new looks. I find so many blogs / sites day by day, see so many little details leading to a blurry imagery that is colorful and creative enough to deal with, and still, so overwhelmingly detailed that it makes you a little confused. Well, Winston Churchill said that “All great things are simple, and many can be expressed in single words.” So I guess this is how we should take fashion- keep things simple and apply only a tiny bit of extremity to it.

Nowadays, for example, I enjoy watching promotional fashion videos of a brand (like the recently mentioned Free People), while there you get not only the dress in its plainness, but a very pleasant impression. I believe that when a dress is placed in the corresponding environment, its impact is somehow magnified.

Some online boutiques applied this idea to their promotional campaigns by creating look books for each season/ several look books for one season. One of my favorites is Ruche. I love their vintage-modern concept, detailed, yet simple designs. Look at the Ruche website and you’re going to find look books, beautiful photos and a blog, a collection of everything that inspires the creators of Ruche.

Looking forward to their fall/winter collection.

Shoop sHoop PhotoShoot

Finally! Next week I'm gonna have a photosession I'm dreaming about for a while now, preparing for the new season (new year maybe), new style and fresh ideas for some upcoming posts. I've spent this day googling some ideas for an ideal location and posing, as I'm not really a model-type-of-person, usually I don't feel too comfortable in front of the camera. So, besides the the blogs giving some interesting Xmas decoration hints that I just couldn't get away from, I've found this collection of fashion pictures. Although the photos taken for Marie Claire were not exactly what I was looking for, I've spent long, long minutes examining them for the beautiful, nude colors, natural hair and make-up and the overall ease these pictures express. Maybe the reason for choosing these pictures as an inspiration is that I feel this kind of calmness around myself these days...even though there's freezing cold out there right now. Here I have the ones I loved the most, but for the other pictures (and other collections as well) click here.

This last picture is from another blog called Our Style in Hungary, a blog of some very talented designers. I really love the hairdo of this girl... that's all :)

Loveable, wearable, heartable

I'd gladly wear black skinny jeans with low cut boots and I'd also like to have leopard flats to wear them at home, longing so badly for showing them around in springish weather. And hell yeah, I need another photosession!!! [Any photographers free some time around??]
